The collaborative project “Mediadas para la inclusión social y equidad en Instituciones de Educación Superior en América Latina” (MISEAL), which is coordinated by Freie Universität Berlin,Institute for Latin American Studies (LAI) and Universidade Estadual de Campinas, addresses social inequalities in the Latin American higher education system. A total of 12 Latin American and 4 European universities participate in this project, which is directed by Prof. Dr. Marianne Braig and PD Dr. Martha Zapata Galindo.

The principal research interest is to understand the mobility of women and other discriminated groups in Latin America. By focusing on the intersectionality among gender, poverty and race, the project aims at promoting measures that facilitate access of previously excluded groups to higher education and therefore contributes to fostering participation and equal opportunities in Latin American universities.
