The goal of this research is to contribute to the knowledge about the history of cultural industries and of production and circulation of mass culture in South America between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. With this purpose, this project will focus on the reconstruction and analysis of a case study based on the figure of Max Glücksmann, a Jewish immigrant from the Austro-Hungarian Empire who settled in Buenos Aires in 1890 and became one of the main entrepreneurs in the fields of film and phonography in the region.
This research takes into account the fact that the development of the industries of film and phonography is a global process, which started in the United States and Europe with the invention of technologies and expanded to the rest of the world. In this regard, this project seeks to analyze the local manifestations of this process in a number of South American cities (mainly Buenos Aires but also Córdoba, Rosario, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile), as well as identify and reconstruct the connections that enabled the introduction and growth of these industries in the region, in which Max Glücksmann had a central role.
The introduction of technologies of mass culture changed the local cultural scene and show business in Argentina. This research aims to understand to what extend this resulted in the penetration of foreign contents and cultural products and, on the other side, until what point this contributed to the re-shaping of popular culture, which adapted to the new conditions of production and circulation. Moreover, I consider that cultural industries enabled the circulation of certain images, representations and discourses that integrated the intellectual landscape of that time. I want to identify what representations of the Nation and of modernity were present in the production of Max Glücksmann as a way yo understand how mass culture acted as a vehicle for the transmission of certain ideas and how technology and commercial practices mediated its circulation.
