Monetary Spaces

A further area of social-scientific research at the Institute for Latin American Studies deals with Latin American countries in the context of their international economic integration. One starting point is the role that money and currency play in the process of economic development and how much room developing and emerging countries have to grow, especially in Latin America in the context of shifts in international capital and trade flows and the structure of the international financial system. Within this field of research, the specific forms of monetary interdependence are highlighted – from the effects of remittances from migrants to their home countries, micro-finance and the causes and problems of debt to the question of appropriate monetary and exchange rate regimes and forms of regional monetary co-operation in the context of developing and emerging countries.
