Freie Universität Berlin, Latin American Institute (LAI) - Main Institute
The main institute of the IRTG is the Latin American Institute (LAI) of the Free University of Berlin. Since its founding in 1970, its research and teaching and has been focussed on political and economic processes of transformation in Latin America and the history and culture of the region. It is the largest institute of its kind in Germany.
The LAI conducts research into the social changes that influence the life of people in Latin America in the wake of globalisation, into the tension between global and local economic, social and political processes, and into the literary and other forms of expression in Latin America. The LAI enjoys a close interdisciplinary cooperation with scholars at Latin American academic institutions. It offers a very lively and wide-ranging international research environment.
The subject of teaching and research is the Romance languages, literatures and cultures. These include French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Rumanian and smaller related languages. Prof. Dr. Dieter Ingenschay’s focuses are urban studies, hybridity (funded by the German Research Foundation), and gay studies.
Professor Dr. Ottmar Ette sees Romance Studies as a discipline that mediates between and is active across other disciplines. Focuses are Alexander von Humboldt, literature as a study of life, TransArea Studies, poetics of movement, and the relationships between regionality and processes of accelerated globalisation.
Participating partners in the IRTG are UNAM’s Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales (IIS), Programa Universitario de Estudios de Género (PUEG) and Centro Coordinador y Difusor de Estudios Latinoamericanos (CCyDEL). The interdisciplinary research institute CCyDEL cooperates with the IRTG in the former’s research projects on Latin American and Caribbean literature and in sociology/cultural anthropology. The IRTG also cooperates with the faculty of Economic History, which supplements the economic studies and debates at the German location.
