Global changes, regional outcomes? Searching for new spaces of action in the Chilean, Paraguayan and Uruguayan Trade Unionism

Betreuer: Prof. Dr. Sérgio Costa (FU Berlin)

Even though the employment structure has been modified worldwide, the global aspect of these transformation should not conceal the fact that different national/regional realities and structural conditions still can exercise vast influence on this changing process and thus develop different outcomes.

From this view, in the research different models of trade unionism will be taken into consideration, relating them to their national and regional realities, as well as to global economic processes. National states remain as a valid unit of analysis when discussing laws, labor rights and political systems, and as such three different countries (Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) will be considered in order to compare to what extent their local features stimulate or hamper globalization processes and their effects on labor and workers' organizations, without losing sight of their regional placement in a world system.

The central question this research aims to answer is to what extent trade unions remain valid collective actors in a globalized economy, and in what ways global processes interact with regional and national realities to produce different outcomes, opening new spaces of action. The entanglement of global and regional/national aspects is at the core of the research, considering that actions from political actors such as trade unions tend to be closely related to national structures, which in turn are tied to global processes: there is an interrelation between the global and the local that produces different outcomes depending on the local basis and (trans)regional relations.
