Teaching and Research Focus: Colombia

The Freie Universität Berlin is one of the German universities, which, together with the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, the Georg August University of Göttingen, the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research (HSFK) and the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg, are involved in the work of the German-Colombian Peace Institute (CAPAZ). The institute is funded by the DAAD with the resources of the German Federal Foreign Office.As an institution for research, teaching and consultancy, the CAPAZ Institute will be responsible for providing and imparting knowledge on peace research, cultural memory, conflict prevention and the organization of a post conflict society.


The Latin America Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin supports CAPAZ within the frame of Teaching and Research: Colombia. Teaching and Research: Colombia brings together the teaching activities and existing research projects that deal with various aspects of Colombia. The Latin America Institute (LAI) is working on different aspects of Colombia’s history and present, in all six disciplines and in interdisciplinary projects.


Latin America Institute has established strong relations with various Colombian universities and scientific institutions for decades. Through these relationships, numerous research cooperation projects and student exchanges have taken place.
In the last years, Latin America Institute has focused on Colombia even more. There are teaching events taking place continuously in all disciplines. In 2015 and 2016, there were research projects that were generated within the frame of excursions to Colombia.
