Nadia Zysman

The purpose of my postdoctoral research project is an analysis of the formation of collective identities of German-speaking Jews in São Paulo, Buenos Aires and New York City from the 1880's to the 1950's. The comparison between the three cities, with an eye to the transformation of urban space alongside immigration, is geared towards singling out the local peculiarities that conditioned collective identity constructions among German-speaking Jews. The project’s main objective is to challenge widely held assumptions about thestability anddefinability of migratory groups by showing, with the example of the migration of German-speaking Jews, the processual nature of identity constructions in an interactive dialogue between local and global phenomena. Therefore, my project aims at contributing to the existing migration historiography by rethinking migrations in such more processual terms.

Fremdheit und Zugehörigkeit: die Erfahrungen deutschsprachiger Juden in der Stadtlandschaft von São Paulo, Buenos Aires und New York (1880-1950)
Mein Postdoc-Forschungsprojekt analysiert die Entstehung kollektiver Identitäten unter deutschsprachigen Juden in São Paulo, Buenos Aires und New York von den 1880ern bis in die 1950er. Das Ziel des Vergleichs zwischen den drei Städten, mit einem Auge auf die Veränderung des städtischen Raums im Zuge der Einwanderung, besteht darin, lokale Besonderheiten zu identifizieren, die kollektive Identitätskonstruktionen unter deutschsprachigen Juden konditionierten. Hauptziel des Projektes ist es weit verbreitete Annahmen über die Stabilität und Definierbarkeit von Migrationsgruppen zu hinterfragen, indem die Arbeit anhand des Beispiels der Migration deutschsprachiger Juden den Prozesscharakter von Identitätskonstruktionen in einem interaktiven Dialog zwischen lokalen und globalen Phänomenen durchleuchtet. Durch die Neubewertung von Wanderungsbewegungen aus einem solchen prozessualen Blickwinkel soll das Projekt auch einen Beitrag zur breiteren Historiographie über Migration leisten.
