Making a Secure Future: Prevention, Punishment, and the Temporalities of Security in Latin America

Markus Hochmüller is an Associated Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Latin American Studies. Prior to that, Markus was a Postdoctoral Fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and a Visiting Research Associate at the Latin American Centre (University of Oxford). He holds a PhD in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin, where he has worked as an Associate Lecturer at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science (2017–2018), a Research Associate at the Collaborative Research Center 700 – “Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood” (2014-2017) and a Lecturer in in Latin American Politics (2012-2013).

His research looks at security, state- and peacebuilding, development, and democratic governance in Latin America. In his PhD thesis he analysed transnational security governance reforms in post-war Guatemala. Markus has conducted field work in Central America, the US, Israel, and Spain, and he has taught courses to undergraduate and graduate students in the area of International Relations, Security Studies, and Latin American Politics.
