Project: "Football, dictatorship, and transnational activism: the 1978 Football World Cup and the Argentine dictatorship’s Pyrrhic victory”
This study will aim to investigate the transnational activism around the 1978 Football World Cup, its consequences for the dictatorship that organised it and the collective memory of the Argentine victory. It will consider the mobilisation for human rights that took place in Mexico and West-Germany in the context of the World Cup, focussing on the Argentine exile and making room for Argentine agency. In doing so, it will reflect on the role of football in international pressure against authoritarianism. The main hypothesis of this research is that the Military Junta in Argentina succeeded in gaining political benefit from the World Cup in the short term, but that in the long term, the denunciations of the violations of human rights that saw the light because of the World Cup negatively affected the image of the dictatorship. To arrive at a conclusion about this issue, the investigation will take into account both primary data in the form of semi structured interviews with involved actors and archives, as well as existing literature about the World Cup and the Argentine exile. The findings of this study can contribute to the understanding of the emergence of human rights as a global discourse during the 1970s, authoritarian regime’s endeavours to instrumentalise major sporting events and the importance of football in modern society.
