Project: 'Relationships in artistic processes with vegetal species (2007-2017)'

Based on the comparative study of a diversity of artistic projects that occurred in Mexican territory (Perejil buscando al sol (2007) by Gilberto Esparza, Campos de convivencia (2010) by Guadalupe Chávez, Rizosfera FM (2016) by Colectiva Electrobiota y Germination (2017) by Alexis Martínez Gutiérrez), I will try to answer the next question: What is it that art prefigures, explores and inspires as an ethics of possibility – that is, as a mechanism that kindles horizons of the imagination which open up and work towards another kind of future horizons?

Through the revision of interviews and audiovisual documents, I want to suggest a methodology to describe that which art pre-figures and practices through its gestures and the relationships that it fosters.

The aim is to argue that the plastic and speculative qualities of art enable us to work at a situated and micro-political level with relationships that do not yet exist, but which, paradoxically, have already come into being. I believe that through collaboration with plants in art, a relational condition emerges which lies on the margins of, and in tension with, the current mode of exploitation and production within the agroindustrial system. Thus, in my research I seek to highlight how artistic processes involving plants create a condition of possibility, intervening in the present to open up alternative future horizons. This research considers art as a suggestion of what our future relationships with plants might become.
