Project: "Teaching Careers and the Building of Professional Identity in Contexts of Confinement"

Supervisor: Dr. Lorenza Villa Lever

This project’s goal is to build new perspectives and categories of analysis for dialogues and discussions that can contribute to the teaching profession at this specific juncture. I search to build bridges, be it conceptual or of operation, around the forms of pedagogy in prison classrooms, as well as to contribute to the establishment of a space of educational research in the context of confinement. I present this project since there is no existing proposal for teacher training in this field nor its integration into the penitentiary system. I am interested into making use of the wealth of teaching experiences that have been developing over the last three decades. Relevant is the construction of the teaching figure from the perspective of its trajectory as an education professional inside and outside of the prison context.

This project relates as well to the Temporalities of Future insofar as its main interest is to contribute to the formation of social and political actors as it is based on the work provided by teachers in different educational centers in penitentiaries of Mexico City and the State of Mexico. It has as well a thematic relationship with the protagonists of the future, for it not only establishes a position of observation from where the teaching body can face the contemporary challenges of Mexico, but it as well creates strategies that confront exclusion in the stigmatized landscape of prisons.

Likewise, this research follows the line of processes that affect the future as it attempts to observe, through the realization of interviews, how reflexive processes of education in contexts confinement occur and how it can contribute to social rehabilitation for those who are deprived of their freedom.
