confluences – Journal of Critical Latin American and Caribbean Studies is a multilingual, open-access, inter- and transdisciplinary academic journal dedicated to critical scholarship on Latin America and the Caribbean. The journal addresses questions of knowledge asymmetries, transregional entanglements, and intersectional inequalities, and publishes contributions that engage contemporary political, social, cultural, and ecological issues from feminist, decolonial, anti-racist, and broader critical perspectives.

confluences positions itself as a forum for critical and transregional scholarship that approaches Latin America and the Caribbean not as isolated areas of expertise, but as historically entangled and globally constitutive regions. The journal fosters exchange across disciplines, languages, and epistemic traditions, while placing particular emphasis on collaborative knowledge production, the inclusion of early-career scholars, experimental and multimodal formats, and open-access publishing practices. Its aim is to create a space in which different bodies of knowledge, experiences, and perspectives can enter into relation, existing hierarchies can be critically examined, and new forms of academic collaboration can be explored.

The name confluences is inspired by the work of the Brazilian intellectual and activist Antônio Bispo dos Santos (1959–2023). For Bispo, confluência refers to the encounter of different cosmologies, forms of knowledge, and modes of practice without reducing them to sameness. The concept points to forms of dialogue in which difference is not overcome but rendered productive. confluences understands this idea as both an intellectual and scholarly-political project: an invitation to bring different perspectives into conversation without dissolving their distinctiveness.

Beginning in Fall 2026, confluences will publish three issues annually. We welcome proposals for themed issues as well as inquiries from prospective book reviewers, editorial collaborators, and scholars interested in contributing to the journal.
