Food for Justice participates in the XX ISA World Congress of Sociology in Melbourne from June 25 until July 1, 2023. Food for Justice organizes two sessions at the congress. One session with the title "The Potential of Food Movements and Intersectional Food Inequalities", held by Marco Teixeira and Renata Motta, looks at social movements that have mobilized against injustices within the food system and built alternative food practices. The session invites papers working on the emancipatory potentials and limitations of food movements in addressing multiple dimensional and intersectional food inequalities. The session will be listed under "RC47 Social Classes and Social Movements" and "RC40 Sociology of Agriculture and Food." The other session "Food and Social Change", organized by Renata Motta and Eloisa Martin (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) uses food as a productive lens to understand broader social dynamics by contributing to a key theoretical debate in sociology. It welcomes proposals conducted at the micro-level of social interactions, when food consumption is a means of, for instance, “doing family” and “doing gender”; at the meso-level, in which the role of political organizations, socio-economic institutions and scientific knowledge regulate food practices; and at the macro-level, in which global market dynamics, international health standards, and cultural discourses impinge on food production, exchange and consumption. The session is listed under "RC40 Sociology of Agriculture and Food" and will be in English and Spanish.

The application deadline for the sessions is September 30, 2022.

The conference will be hybrid.
