"Indigenous youth in transformation: citizenship processes of young tojolab’al women and men that actively participate in Non Governmental Organizations in Las Margaritas Chiapas."
Supervisor: Dr. María de la Soledad Gónzales Montes (Colmex)
This research focuses on the experiences of young indigenous tojolab’al women and men living in Las Margaritas Chiapas who actively collaborate in Non-Governmental Organizations that fight for sexual and reproduction rights of young people in the region. Based on their own statements, it analyzes the gender dynamics and citizenship processes that arise during their collaboration with these NGOs when they actively seek to affect their public and private surroundings. These young persons come from an indigenous community with a long history of organized political struggle for their rights which today intertwines with external feminist movements, generating particular dynamics that have been barely researched. This research is based on an ethnographic methodology and 28 interviews were applied: 18 young activists (13 women and 5 men) and 10 adults (7 women and 3 men) who are directly related to the latter.
