Doctoral programme

Structured Doctoral Programme “Latin America in Comparative and Transregional Perspective”

The doctoral programme, which focuses on Latin American states, cultures and societies, offers young researchers the opportunity to obtain a degree in an interdisciplinary and international study and research programme. In the course of studies and during the writing of the dissertation, perspectives from different disciplines are brought together and complemented by interdisciplinary knowledge specific to the region. The regular duration of the programme is six semesters.

The aim of the doctoral programme is to train highly qualified researchers by supporting them to carry out excellent research in the field of their choice (Cultural and Social Anthropology, Gender Studies, History, Latin American Literature and Culture, Economics, Political Science and Sociology).

How to apply

If you wish to apply for the structured doctoral programme, you should send your application to the contact person for LAI doctoral programmes, Dr Lasse Hölck, together with an offer of supervision from an LAI professor. For more information on the required documents, please see the Application and Admissions page.

Admission as a doctoral student

Once you have successfully submitted your application, the Selection Committee will determine whether you meet the relevant criteria for admission. If so, you will be admitted. Depending on your qualifications, your admission may be unconditional or subject to you improving your knowledge of your chosen research area by attending relevant courses. In either case, you should receive a letter from the Selection Committee confirming their decision.

Duration of the dissertation writing period

You are expected to complete your dissertation within six semesters. Doctoral students have the opportunity to participate in research programmes initiated by members of their supervisory team. At the same time, it is possible to study abroad at institutions with which cooperation and agreements are already in place. In general, the maximum duration of such visiting periods is six months. Both the location and the duration of the period abroad will vary according to the needs of each project.
