Project: "The Introduction of Smuggling Routes from the Non-Hispanic Caribbean in Spanish America and the First Republics (1670-1815)"

The doctoral research focuses in the Caribbean space, identifying what were the government policies developed by the Spanish Crown to confront the economic and territorial control of the main foreign powers in America. To do this, we will try to demonstrate the intention of the Crown for integrating the foreign routes into the official trade ultramarine channels, to prevent, anticipate and safeguard control over overseas circuits. The research, rather than identifying the foreign routes, aims to investigate the different moments of the non-Hispanic integration to the official circuits during the Spanish government and early years of the American Republics. This will try to demonstrate that the Spanish-American maritime trade acted as a single functional unit but not in a segmented way (official trade vs. smuggling) as modern historiography presented it.
