The triumph of the Cuban Revolution energized discussions in Mexican artistic and cultural circles after 1959, both among supporters and detractors. Some of these debates took place in the Revista de la Universidad de México. This article analyses the progressive approach to Cuba taken by the magazine's editor, Jaime García Terrés, and its outcome in the face of the 1961 anti-communist campaign against him and other Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México officials. By examining intellectual history and the historiographic exploration of the New Left, I problematize the foundations of a controversy around intellectual commitment that finally proved to be more of a more bureaucratic than an ideological dispute.
