The International Graduate School "Between Spaces. Movements, Actors and Representations of Globalisation" sponsored by the DFG (German Research Foundation) aimed to open up new perspectives on globalisation research in the social sciences and humanities. Through dialogue between disciplines and different scientific traditions in Germany and Mexico, the research programme aims to contribute to a transnational and interdisciplinary field of research. The focus of the IGC is on the movements between the different regions of the world and the new spaces that are generated from them in the historical and current phases of globalisation.

DFG Research Project "Indian Knowledge in Latin American Modernity

The project contributes to the transareal study of historical South-South interconnections between the Latin American and Asian regions. It deals with the intellectual and cultural relations between Latin America and India between 1880 (Hispano-American modernismo) and 1940 (period of upheaval due to global historical events), i.e. with an epoch that is of central importance for the constitution of a heterogeneous and interwoven Latin American modernity.

DAAD-funded priority Colombia

Through the Latin America Institute (LAI), Freie Universität Berlin is one of the German universities involved in the establishment and work of the German-Colombian Peace Institute (DKFI/CAPAZ), together with Justus Liebig University Giessen, Georg August University Göttingen, the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research (HSFK) and Albert Ludwig University Freiburg. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is funding the establishment for ten years from autumn 2016 with funds from the Federal Foreign Office.

Actors of Cultural Globalisation, 1860-1930

The research group investigates the dynamics of cultural exchange processes in the first peak phase of the history of globalisation around 1900, with a special focus on the actors and mediators of transnational interaction. The focus is on the question of the different modes of negotiating cultural, political and social difference. In the field of tension between homogenising tendencies on the one hand, and the profiling and construction of demarcations on the other, the complex processes of cultural and social change under conditions of global interdependence will be examined.

Carbiocial

Carbiocial was a collaborative project of twelve universities in Germany and Austria, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which developed multidisciplinary perspectives on the multiple interdependencies between climate change and land management. The joint research region was located along the 1700 km long federal highway BR-163 in the southern Amazon region of Brazil, running from south to north, from Cuiabá/Mato Grosso to Santarém/Pará.
