Project: "Democracies, Modernities and the Temporalities of Future in Latin America: Sociological Interpretations of Contemporary Brazil"

Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Sérgio Costa, Freie Universität Berlin

The present research falls within the scope of the International Research Training Group Temporalities of Future in Latin America: Dynamics of Aspiration and Anticipation, and it discusses democracy and modernity as processes that reveal significant intersections between past-present-future, hence affecting aspirations and anticipations of different social actors. Specifically, the research project proposes an analysis of contemporary sociological interpretations of democracy and modernity in Brazil. Based on the understanding that the election of the far-right to the highest office of the executive power in the country has mobilised different sociological readings, both in relation to aspects of the past that explain the present and aspects of the present that threaten the future, the proposed research intends to join the IRTG’s debates with a particular axis of analysis, therefore acquiring a special scholarly relevance. By taking Brazilian social sciences as protagonists of the future in the production of discourses that aim to give meaning to the experiences of the present, such an endeavour gains even greater relevance, especially once the differences at the core of these readings are considered and typified. The research’s methodological procedure of data collection and analysis is divided into three main phases. The first phase will involve a mapping of the main sociological interpretations about the Brazil of the present. The second phase will cover the reading, analysis and categorisation of the selected bibliography. Finally, the third phase will concentrate on the systematisation of the results in order to produce an answer to the research question of how do contemporary sociological interpretations on Brazilian modernity and democracy, which are endowed with diverse aspirations and anticipations, discursively shape the temporalities of future in the country.
