Supervisor:
Prof. Dr. Stefan Rinke, Freie Universität Berlin

With this research I seek to analyze the cultural, political, artistic, and social implications of the ideas of the future produced by the Mexican cinematographic sphere inspired by the reflections and exchanges with the Cuban Revolution between the 1960s and the 1970s. I will begin studying the cultural circulation between Mexico and Cuba and the impact of the Cuban revolution on it, as well as the New/Independent Cinema in Mexico before the Cuban Revolution and the later feedback and exchange with ICAIC (founded in 1959). Then I will explore the ideas of future propounded or criticized within the Mexican cinematographic sphere in the 1960s and the 1970s. Finally, I will analyze the audiovisual representations of the Cuban transformation process in the Mexican film productions of those decades, and their political and aesthetical characteristics to propose a historical interpretation regarding the expressions, discussions, and productions within this group of Mexican filmmakers, that may show their diversity according to their different kind of ties with the Cuban Revolution.

The Mexican cinematographic sphere produced along the 1960s and the 1970s several representations of the Cuban Revolution which expressed ideas of future produced within the context of the cultural circulation between Mexico and Cuba. The aesthetical and political dimensions of the utopian constructions may have been a result of: the reflections made by the Mexican filmmakers facing the political and social situation in Mexico in contrast with the transformations on the island, their dialogues with the Cuban filmmakers or their collaboration with the institutions and events in the revolutionary Cuba that made possible those exchanges. The former conceptions of a New Cinema or an “independent” cinema in Mexico bolstered the circulation, nurtured and got a feedback with ICAIC. In several cases, thinking of an alternative future of the cinema was the starting point for the politicization and taking a stand by the filmmakers, who saw in the social and political revolution in Cuba a possibility to think, in consequence, about the future of the cinema, as well as one for the Mexican and Latin American societies.
