Project: "Reparative Futures: Democracy and Dignity from Queer and Trans Struggles"
What can queer and trans struggles teach us about the future of democracy? This project investigates social movements in Latin America as not merely making claims upon democracy but as generative sources for reimagining it. Through their pursuit of a life with dignity, queer and trans movements articulate and enact a vision of radical democracy as a form of ongoing repair. This research develops the concept of "reparative futures" to capture this dual praxis: a critical dismantling of the heteronormative, patriarchal, and colonial violences that persist after formal political transitions, and a prefigurative building of alternative social worlds.
Based on fieldwork in Argentina and Colombia, this study traces how reparative futures are forged along two axes. The first is an engagement with the state, where movements strategically navigate transitional justice mechanisms to demand official accountability, all while exposing the state’s limited capacity to build transformative futures. The second, and more foundational, axis is the grassroots work of "reparations from below." Here, dignity has been materialized through the creation of trans cooperatives, community economies, and symbolic acts that collectively embody non-normative forms of life, care, and kinship. By centering queer and trans praxis, the project advances a vision where the futures of democracy are tied not to a static institutional arrangement but to a lived, reparative process – one that continuously disputes and cultivates the conditions for a dignified life.
