Vortrag I “Toward a Livable Life: The Travesti Struggle in Brazil and Its Pedagogies” by Maria Clara Araújo dos Passos
This lecture takes place in the frame of the course “Mapping the Global Far Right: Analytical Approaches and Case Studies” (Sérgio Costa & Belén Díaz).
In various parts of the world, we are currently witnessing a context in which gender has become a central focus of mobilizations led by neoconservative sectors. In Brazil, the anti-gender discourse has underpinned official statements, institutional measures, and legislative proposals at multiple levels. This talk explores the ongoing struggles over the rights of travesti and transsexual people in a scenario fraught with anti-trans attacks. Drawing on her book “Pedagogies of Travesti Liberation”, Maria Clara Araújo dos Passos walks us through the socio-political movements and travesti-centered pedagogical frameworks that challenge traditional educational paradigms—advocating instead for visibility, self-determination, and the joy of marginalized identities.
This event is part of the series “School of Quilombismo: Gender Euphoria”, organized by Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The book launch of “Pedagogies of Travesti Liberation” will take place on Saturday, October 18, at 6 PM at HKW (Safi Faye Hall).
