Currently working on a PhD project: “Making of the Arab Identity in 20th Century Chilean Literature” under Prof. Susanne Klengel from Latin American Institute, FU Berlin  and co-supervised by Prof. Isabel Toral, Seminar for Semitic and Arabic Studies, Freie University Berlin.

Associate Fellow at the Berlin Graduate School of Muslim Cultures and Societies, Free University Berlin from October 2023 till date.

Experience:

Gave an Extension Lecture on Arab Mahjar Literary Writings in Latin America with Prof. Sonya Surabhi Gupta, organized by Department of Arabic, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi on 20/11/2024.

Presented a paper on “Tracing Corporeality of Arab Migrants in Chilean Neomahyar Literature” in the 28thInternational Conference, “Bodies that Matter”: Deconstructing Corporeality, organized by the Dept. of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi from 14-16 March, 2024.

Worked  as a Guest Lecturer in the Spanish faculty at the Department of Foreign Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi (August 2025- December 2025)

Project Description:

Title : “Making of the Arab Identity in 20^th Century Chilean Literature”

The research project essentially dwells in the south-south entanglements between the shared histories of Latin America and the Arab World. It intends to explore this entanglement by focusing on six literary works written by Chilean writers of Arab descent in Spanish language, about the transcontinental migration by young Arabs from the Levant region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and the stories of their subsequent absorption in the Chilean society. 

Through textually engaging with the literary narratives of the ‘turcos’, the project aims to examine the process of writing as a vehicle for articulating lived memory and imagined memory; consequently shaping a new transcultural identity in postcolonial Latin America. I aspire to use the selected literary corpus as a repository of historical memory that was somehow missed/left behind in the national narrative of social integration, to unmake the identity of ‘turcos’ and rewrite it in twentieth century Chile.
