These screening and talk take place as part of the course “Mapping the Global Far Right: Analytical Approaches and Case Studies”.

The Other Side is a project that began as a spontaneous recording of what we perceived at the time as the end of a brief period or right-wing politics, not only in Argentina but also in several Latin American countries. Back in 2019, when we started this project, we did not expect to see such a marked escalation in certain formal, ideological and communicational aspects related to the advance of the far right in our country nor around the world.

Basic consensus on human rights, women’s rights, and the rights of people in general began to be explicitly attacked since. In 2019, we took out our cell phones and began this record at a march in support of right-wing President Mauricio Macri, who saw his chances of reelection fading in favor of an alliance of so-called progressive parties. “SISEPUEDE” is the result of that first approach to right-wing supporters, which would later become the main subject of this series of short films.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the extreme right-wing expressions that seemed to have been left behind returned with more force than ever, giving rise to “27,610, From the other side,” about the approval of the Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy Law in Argentina in 2020/21. Javier Milei’s surprise victory in the 2023 presidential elections sparked “Milei Rally” (2025, working title, WIP), about President Javier Milei’s rock show in 2024.

We aim to document the other side – the mobilizations, marches, events, and the people involved – in order to understand what motivates them, what they identify with, and why they support different candidates. These short films are not intended as a platform for our own views, but as an effort to understand and bring visibility to perspectives that are usually unfamiliar or inaccessible to us.

The Other Side is, for now, a self-funded project carried out by documentary filmmakers, teachers, and university researchers (Universidad de Buenos Aires) Elena Bursztein and Axel Rosito. The short films that make up this project have been screened at different festivals and exhibitions in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, the Basque Country, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland, and the United States, among others.
