International Symposium at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin

While some scholars have contributed notions of a “New” or “Second” Cold War to the public debate in light of current global political developments, it remains both challenging and important to grasp the significance of the past for Latin America when so much remains unknown about the legacies of the Cold War in the region. This symposium addresses this problem, expanding previous academic research that has until recently prioritized the USA-USSR super-power conflict and the study of diplomatic, political, and economic history. Instead, the symposium focuses mainly on the relationship between the Eastern European Socialist Bloc and the Global South, and on issues of culture. Featuring the works of a diverse group of international scholars who focus on relations with Latin America, as well as on the impact of the Cold War between Latin American countries, it contributes four panels introducing topics of music, Cuba, and Latin American interregional histories, including presentations addressing questions of race, gender, historical memory, science, and more.

Aunque la noción de una “Nueva” o “Segunda” Guerra Fría está siendo debatida en círculos académicos en vista de los actuales acontecimientos políticos globales, sigue siendo desafiante y a la vez importante comprender el significado del pasado para América Latina cuando aún se desconoce tanto sobre los legados de la Guerra Fría en la región. Este simposio aborda este problema, centrándose en la relación entre el Bloque Socialista de Europa del Este y el Sur Global, y en cuestiones de cultura, y de esta forma amplia estudios previos que han tendido a priorizado el conflicto entre las superpotencias EEUU-URSS y el estudio de la historia diplomática, política y económica. El evento agrupa a un grupo diverso de académicos internacionales que se centran en las relaciones con América Latina, así como en el impacto de la Guerra Fría entre los países latinoamericanos. Sus ponencias se agrupan alrededor de cuatro paneles sobre música, Cuba, e historias interregionales de América Latina, abordando asuntos de raza, género, memoria histórica, ciencia, entre otras cuestiones.
