PhD project "Struggles for hegemony in the 21st century: The renewal of the Latin American right"

Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Sérgio Costa

This doctoral project investigates how right-wing actors in Latin America craft the future by engaging in the contemporary struggles for constructing hegemony through rejuvenated discourses and innovative mobilization mechanisms. I analyze how new protagonists such as right-leaning digital influencers and youth movements attempt to interpellate the “prosumers” of the digital age and to what extent they are successful in shaping individual and societal aspirations. Building upon the analysis of paradigmatic cases in Brazil and Ecuador, I delve into the hegemonic struggles over common-sense-making and into the novel subjectivation processes of the 21st century. Hence, this research project contributes to close the gap in the literature on Latin American politics since the turn of the century that has dealt mainly with the “pink-tide” governments, thereby neglecting the strategies of the right wing.
